Summary
Padma Prasad Devkota, son of the great poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota, is a retired professor of Tribhuwan University. He gained keen interest on learning more about the king if Salyan, Shamsher Bahadur Shah, and his family's history after he read Laxmi Prasad Devkota's essay 'Pleasure in Humiliation'.
In this essay 'Pleasure in Humiliation', Laxmi Prasad Devkota has shared his recollection when he was studying I.Sc. when the result were out, Devkota passed the examination but his two friends, who were the grandsons of The King of Salyan, called Devkota and had his paper rechecked but found no fault in it. Devkota told the king not to think that only a royal family can excel but a common man can also do better.
He then obtained an appointment with the octogenarian (person who is in his 80's ) Birendra Bahadir Shah, one of the five grandsons of the King of Salyan at his resindence at 11 a.m. on the 9th of January 2008. He reached there on time. Mr. Shah (Birendra Bahadur) didn't take him to his home nor brought a chair to sit down outside. Mr. Devkota began to interview him standing in the middle of the gate and the house. Mr. Shah shared so many things like his son Gehendra Bahadur had five aons, among them Jitendra Bahadur and his cousin were Paxmi Prasad Devkota's Classmates etc.
Suddenly a dog came near him and started sniffing around him. Mr. Devkota became afraid and couldn't decide what to do. He once asked Mr. Shah to chose it away but got the reply that it has been given anti-rabies injection. Nothing will happen. The dog finally bit Mr. Devkota into his bum that made him jump and cry out in agony. The dog was still there moving forward and backward of Mr. Devkota. Mr. Shah did nothing. Mr. Devkota was desperately waiting for someone to come to his rescue.
Mr. Shah finally called his servant and he took the dog away saying "You don't have to fear. It has been injected".
Mr. Devkota thought that the person to be blamed is the master not the dog because knowing that it bites every stranger that visits the house, why they didn't leash or lock it up in the kennel before receiving anyone inside the gate.
Mr. Devkota, suffering much from pain and fear, took his things and moved from there. Neither the Patrician nor pkebeian asked him if he was bleeding. He didn't show his wound to anyone standing there. He thought how hypocrite and feudal they are. How heartless they are to the common people? Mr. Shah could have asked him whether he needed any medical attention. He could at least have offered to call a cab (taxi) for him to go home. But Mr. Shah simply stood there watching him go as if nothing had ever happened.
Padma Prasad took five vaccine shots against the dog bite at Himal Nursing Home.
